ADULTS AND SENIORS
With community support, the JCCGW helps senior adults
stay healthy, active and engaged. Most importantly, we
help them to age in place.
The JCCGW served approximately 10,000
hot kosher lunches to seniors at six sites in
Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.
Through a generous gift, Sy and Sheila Herman
sponsored “The Memoir Project,” a program
designed to promote documentation of life memories.
We formed a weekly discussion group where men can
meet new friends and discuss topics of interest such
as politics, current events and health.
The Center hosted Holy Cross Hospital’s Memory
Academy, a program developed at UCLAs Center
for Aging that helps participants acquire general
strategies to improve their memory.
The JCCGW and Jewish Social Service Agency
(JSSA) partnered to provide social workers at
many Center programs for seniors who are going
through difficult transitions, or who need resource
information and support services.
Seniors took classes on subjects as diverse as
beginning computer and opera to creative writing
and Israeli current events at the Adult Center for
Education (ACE) seminars in the spring and in the fall.
Hundreds of seniors participated in a variety of social
and educational events through the Coming of Age
(CoA) program. Funded in part by a grant from the
State of Maryland, CoA helps keep seniors connected
and promotes good health and well-being. Programs
are held at the JCCGW, Ring House and Leisure
World. Local excursions, such as trips to restaurants
and the theater, are a popular aspect of the program.
The Hurwitz Internal Light Program, funded in part
by the George and Tess Hurwitz Internal Light Fund
and the Montgomery County Department of Health &
Human Services, offers education and information for
older adults who are visually impaired. This endowed
program also received generous support from the Aid
Association for the Blind in FY12.
The Center’s kosher nutrition program has been
named the Selma Sweetbaum Satellite Nutrition
1. Sy and Sheila Herman, dedicated JCCGW supporters and sponsors of “The Memoir Project.”
2. Member Toby Gottesman volunteers his time and energy to facilitate the men’s discussion group.
3. Volunteer faculty members of the ACE program were honored at an end-of semester party.
4. Coming of Age members modeled current styles at a fashion show held at Ring House.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
The JCCGW created the Young Professionals Task
Force with a mission to foster community by providing
a portal for new experiences and connecting local
Jewish young professionals to each other and
the greater community. Attended by dozens of
enthusiastic young professionals, events included:
Hiking the Billy Goat Trail at Great Falls
A cooking competition, patterned after the
television show “Top Chef,” to find out who could
add the most creative spin to the popular Israeli
dish, shakshuka
A community service project
A summer social
BENDER-DOSIK PARENTING CENTER
Storytime Morning and Music Together Babies
are just two of the many popular classes we offer
to help build brain development in babies and
parenting skills.
We offered a variety of parenting workshops
featuring experts such as Kim West, aka The
Sleep Lady; Bonnie Zucker, psychologist and
author of Anxiety Free Kids; and Aviva Goldfarb,
author and creator of The Six O’clock Scramble.
This year, the JCCGW also partnered with PEP
(Parent Encouragement Program) to offer parenting
seminars at the Center.
Program in honor of Selma Sweetbaum, who retired
after a 35-year career at the JCCGW advocating on
behalf of senior adults. Offering hot, healthy kosher
lunches as well as lectures, cultural activities,
exercise and socialization, the nutrition program is
a lifeline for older members of Montgomery County
and Prince George’s County.
In our Gateways program for new Americans from the
Former Soviet Union, approximately 90 senior adults
attended our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other
Languages) classes. Twenty-five of them attended
citizenship preparation class. Ten of our students took,
and passed, the exam to become U.S. citizens.
The Center’s kosher nutrition program was named in honor of Selma
Sweetbaum (above), who recently retired as JCCGW adult services
director. An expert in her field, Selma has received numerous awards
and has been appointed to many local and national committees and
commissions, including the White House Conference on Aging.
Hiking the Billy Goat Trail at Great Falls offered a great opportunity
for these young professionals, an upcoming generation of community
leaders, to network and socialize.
Music Together, an internationally-recognized early childhood music and movement
program for children and the grownups who love them, is just one of the many
popular classes offered by the Bender-Dosik Parenting Center.

CAMP, YOUTH & TEENS
JCC campers had an “Excellent Adventure through
Time” in summer 2011. The summer was jam-packed
with fun and meaningful activities, and enrollment
increased over 13% from the previous summer.
The JCCGW received a grant from JCC Association
to sponsor the “Power of Words” project, which
was on exhibit in the Goldman Art Gallery. The
project encouraged campers to use creative and
artistic ways to show how words can be helpful or
harmful to others.
Our revamped after-school program allows parents
flexibility in choosing the days to enroll their
children, as well as flexibility for the children
to choose electives and create a personalized
experience. Enrollment in the program increased
by 20% this year.
Rockville Open House (ROH) meets monthly in the
Teen Center. ROH is a supervised, safe gathering
space for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender,
queer, questioning, or intersex Jewish teens.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
The JCCGW preschool utilizes a Reggio Emilia approach
to education, a program based on the principles
of respect, responsibility, and community through
exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching
environment.
In March 2012, six members of the preschool staff
attended Study Institute at the Malaguzzi Center
in Reggio Emilia, Italy to learn about the Reggio
approach in greater depth and explore Reggio
through a Jewish perspective.
The tour was underwritten through the JCCGW
and the preschool’s Early Childhood Parent
Committee (ECPC). Funds were raised in part
through ECPC events.
1-2. Camp JCC campers are fortunate to have the use of indoor facilities—such as the gym, art studio and auditorium—as well as outdoor facilities, including
the pool, ball field and grounds.
3. On Grandparents Day, always a highlight of the year, this JCCGW Preschool student dressed to impress.

Dance
The Senior Youth Dance Company was selected
to perform at the Youth Dance Festival at Dance
Place in Washington DC in March 2012.
The JCCGW Dance School expanded its production
company by forming “The Junior Youth Dancers.”
Both the Junior and Senior Dance Companies
performed in June at our end-of-year dance recital.
Film
Nearly 2,000 patrons screened and discussed 10
award-winning films from Israel, the US, Germany,
the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom at the 4th
Annual Jewish Film Festival in March.
“77 Steps”— a film about the personal journey
of the filmmaker, Ibtisam Mara’ana, who left her
Arab-Muslim village and moved to Tel Aviv—was
shown in our Kreeger Auditorium as part of Café
Seret (Israeli Movie Café). Mara’ana attended the
showing and held a post-film discussion.

Approximately 75 students, including children and
adults, took music lessons at the JCCGW. We also
offered music classes in partnership with a local
music school, Bach to Rock.
The indie rock/Sephardic music band Deleon
performed in May in conjunction with the DCJCC’s
Washington Jewish Music Festival.
Kreeger Auditorium Renovation
The Center has started a major renovation on
the Kreeger Auditorium. We gratefully thank the
Gildenhorn/Speisman families and the Philip L.
Graham Fund for their generous support and the State
of Maryland for issuing a Bond Bill. The renovation
will modernize our facilities to make them more
accessible to all, improve energy efficiency and costs,
and enhance audience enjoyment. Once completed,
our theater will be a state-of-the-art, community
performing arts destination.
INCLUSION AND SPECIAL NEEDS
More than 60 children with special needs were
able to attend camp alongside their typically-
developing siblings and peers. Funding for this
program is provided by generous support from
the Stanley S. Bender Special Needs Inclusion
Program at Camp JCC, The Jewish Federation of
Greater Washington, National Inclusion Project,
and the Montgomery County Department of Health
& Human Services.
Literary Arts
The 42
nd
Annual Book Festival took place in
November and featured a handpicked selection
of more than 5,000 newly-published books of
Jewish content and 26 author events.
Literary programs continued throughout the
program year featuring sportswriter John
Feinstein, blogger and author Jill Smokler, and
Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat.
Music
The Polinger Artists of Excellence Concert Series
celebrated its 40th anniversary season featuring six
chamber concerts. In recognition of this milestone,
Gerry and Howard
z”l
Polinger and the Polinger family
were honored at a special concert in April which
featured pianist Navah Perlman (Itzhak Perlman’s
daughter) and her fellow musicians, cellist Zuill
Bailey and violinist Philippe Quint.
1. The Honorable Stuart E. Eizenstat visited the Center to discuss his book, “The Future of the Jews.”
2. The Polinger family was honored in appreciation of their vision in creating the Polinger Artists of Excellence Concert Series and for their longstanding support of
JCCGW music programs. Gerry Polinger, seated, posed for a photo with musicians (from left) Phillipe Quint, Zuill Bailey and Navah Perlman.

JCC MACCABI GAMES
In summer 2011, Team Greater Washington
traveled to Israel; Springfield, MA; and
Philadelphia, PA to participate in the JCC Maccabi
Games where Jewish teens between the ages
of 13 and 16 competed in Olympics-style events.
We thank the Bender Foundation and Rockville
SportsPlex for their generous support of the 2011
JCC Maccabi Games.
In May 2012, JCCGW athletes age 10-12 traveled
to Harrisburg, PA to participate in the Mid-Atlantic
Junior Games. They also participated in Jewish
Heritage Night, which was sponsored by the
Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning and the
Washington Wizards, at the Verizon Center in April.
The Annette M. and Theodore N. Lerner Family
Foundation sponsored our 2011 Camp Kochavim,
a program for teens and young adults with a wide
range of disabilities. Twenty-nine older teens and
young adults with special needs participated in
the program. Children’s Charities Foundation, the
Abraham and Frieda Hochberg Foundation, and the
Estelle Friedman Gervis Family Foundation also
helped support Camp Kochavim.
Twenty-six participants and 24 volunteers took
part in the Gudelsky Exceptional Swim Program for
children and adults with physical, orthopedic-related
disabilities. This program is funded by a grant from
the Bertha and Isadore Gudelsky Family Foundation.
In observance of Jewish Disability Awareness
Month in February 2012, all three area JCCs
partnered to present “ReelAbilities: Disabilities
Film Festival.” Each film was accompanied
by discussions and programming to bring the
community together to explore and celebrate our
diversity.
The Team JCCGW delegation of 61 teens proudly marched in the opening
ceremony of the 2011 JCC Maccabi Games in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Much more than an athletic competition, the Games promote community
service involvement, sportsmanship and religious pride, and provide the
opportunity for Jewish teens to form long-lasting memories and friendships.
A Gudelsky Exceptional Swim Program student and her volunteer coach
celebrate success. The students enjoy the opportunity to move in the forgiving
environment of water. For the families, the program offers a supportive
network to socialize and share information.

Chief Operating Officer Amy Gantz and Chief
Program Officer Tracey Dorfmann participated in
the JCCA (Jewish Community Centers Association)
Familiarization Trip to Poland and Israel in December
2011. JCCAs goals for the trip were to promote
Israel engagement and programming, and to assist
JCCs in connecting their members and Israel.
Expressions Fine Art, a unique art exhibit featuring
Israeli artists, and A Matter of Landscape, an
exhibition of photographs taken by award-winning
Israeli photographer Chanan Getraide, were
featured in the Goldman Art Gallery.
JEWISH LIFE
Our Chanukah and Purim celebrations drew
hundreds of community members of all ages who
participated in fun and meaningful activities that
were planned and implemented in partnership with
the Tzofim (Israeli Scouts) at the Center.
In observance of Rosh Hashanah, a Selichot
(prayers recited leading up to and through the High
Holidays) Service and a challah-baking workshop
were held in September.
Context, an adult education program offered by
The Institute for Jewish Learning at the Jewish
Theological Seminary, was held at the JCCGW.
Offering an exploration of Jewish history and
intensive study, and interaction with accomplished
Jewish studies scholars, the program was held in
partnership with Beth Sholom Congregation, B’nai
Israel Congregation, Congregation Har Shalom and
Partnership for Jewish Life & Learning.
Biblical archaeology lectures were held throughout
the year in partnership with ASOR (American
Schools of Oriental Research) and BASONOVA
(Biblical Archaeology Society of Northern Virginia,
Maryland and DC).
A Bible Series was held at the JCCGW in
partnership with the Foundation for Jewish
Studies.
ISRAEL AT THE CENTER
The JCCGW shlicha (Israeli emissary) brought
insights of Israel to the Center and the community
through a variety of lectures and discussions
throughout the school year, and through Israel-
related activities and projects at Camp JCC.
A celebration of Israel’s 64
th
birthday was
held at Rockville Town Square in June 2012 in
partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater
Washington. Hundreds of community members
gathered for a day of spirited celebration including
a performance by Danny Sanderson, one of the
most influential performers on the Israeli cultural
scene.

WELLNESS, FITNESS & SPORTS
The Center partnered with Shady Grove Adventist
Hospital to hold health screenings, which are open
to the community, at the JCCGW.
The JCCGW and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital
cosponsored two Health Expos—one for families
held at the JCCGW in the fall, and one for seniors
held at Leisure World in the spring. The expos
served to increase awareness of health care
resources in our community, provide preventative
care information, and screen for certain conditions.
Washington Consumers’ CHECKBOOK awarded the
JCCGW Health & Fitness Center their top rating
for quality.
The Health & Fitness Department added new,
state-of-the-art cardio equipment with personal
audio/visual systems.
A triathlon class was added to the Health &
Fitness schedule. The class culminated with an
indoor triathlon with 10 participants.
We offered more than 65 weekly group exercise classes.
The Ariel Quartet, composed of Israeli musicians,
performed at the Center as part of the Polinger
Artists of Excellence Concert Series.
The preschool was treated to a concert by talented
young musicians from Beit Shemesh, our sister city
in Israel. The group appeared as part of the 2012
Hafla (Party) Delegation, celebrating and sharing
traditions of Israel, in conjunction with The Jewish
Federation of Greater Washington’s Partnership
2Gether program for Israel engagement.
A lecture and discussion was held at the Center
concerning Dan Senor and Saul Singer’s book,
“Start-Up Nation: the Story of Israel’s Economic
Miracle,” which depicts the amazing progress
Israel has made since its birth.
Professor Robert Eisen of George Washington
University was at the Center to present a lecture
titled, “Hawks and Doves: the Complexities of
Religious Zionism.”

Three Centers, One Community
JCCGW members now have full access to the
Washington DC JCC and the JCC of Northern
Virginia thanks to the Three Centers, One
Community initiative. In addition to providing
members full reciprocity at each of the three area
JCCs, the JCCs have worked together on a number
of communitywide events including the Jewish Film
Festival, the Jewish Music Festival, “Reel Abilities:
Disabilities Film Festival” and IsraelFest. The three
JCCs are also offering a free one-year membership to
all Birthright Israel trip alumni.
CENTER WITHOUT WALLS
Recognizing the need to reach out to those in our
community who may not live in close proximity to the
Center, the JCCGW launched a Center Without Walls
initiative which will grow in the coming years.
Author events, film showings and a health & wellness
expo were held at Leisure World in Silver Spring.
Our adult department has satellite sites serving
seniors in Silver Spring and Bowie.
VOLUNTEERS
Approximately 190 adults collectively donated
close to 8,000 hours of their time to the Center.
Jonina Duker, Isadore Goldman, and Arlene Mager
each volunteered over 300 hours.

is an innovative program designed to change the
philanthropic conversation in our community by
creating a collaborative approach to legacy giving. A
project of the United Jewish Endowment Fund of The
Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, Create
a Jewish Legacy aims to build a strong, vibrant
community for generations to come.
Flora M. Stetson Legacy Society
Flora M. Stetson’s love of the arts led her to volunteer at
the JCCGW’s Goldman Art Gallery. Ms. Stetson’s passion
for her volunteer work at the Center, and her joy in being
part of the Center’s warm and welcoming community, led
her to make a generous legacy gift that will continue to
have an impact for generations to come.
The Stetson Society recognizes and honors
individuals and families who, through their estate
plans, have created a legacy for the Center in the
form of a bequest or other planned gift.
Golf & Tennis Tournament
Held on June 11, 2012 at Lakewood Country Club in

Endowments
The JCCGW has more than 200 named endowment
funds. Income generated by these funds helps
underwrite the costs associated with a wide range
of classes, lectures and workshops, cultural arts,
scholarships for camp and preschool, and meals
for members of our community. Establishing an
endowment fund is a wonderful way to honor the
memory of a loved one, or to serve as a living tribute.
A complete list can be found on pages 14-16.
Annual Fund
The Board Development Committee, led by Vice
President for Development Mindy Berger, helped us
