Development and implementation timelines are subject to State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and legislative action. This table will continue to be updated as certificates are established, and new exams are developed.
1. Required Pedagogy Test(s): Candidates receiving a first Texas certificate for a classroom teaching area must pass a Pedagogy test in addition to the content-pedagogy test(s) required. Candidates adding a supplemental certificate to an existing
certificate, certifying in additional areas by examination, or certifying in some non-teaching areas like Reading Specialist or School Librarian may not need another pedagogy test.
2. Certificates Scheduled for Deletion: For certificates and/or tests set to expire, candidates must meet the deadlines to complete requirements such as testing, coursework, and internships/student teaching and must apply and be recommended by their
educator preparation program for certification by posted deadline. Candidates may use scores if they meet all certification requirements, apply, and be recommended for certification by deadline. Candidates may use passing scores on an examination
required for certification if the candidate is recommended for certification up to one year after the last operational date for the examination.
3. Abbreviations: AAFCS – American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; ACTFL - American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages; ETS – Educational Testing Services; OPI – Oral Proficiency Interview; PASL - Performance assessment
for School Leaders; PPR - Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities; STR – Science of Teaching Reading; TExES - Texas Examinations of Educator Standards; WPT – Writing Proficiency Test.
