ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia headed to the College Football Playoff as
the clear No . 1, defeating No . 11 LSU 50-30 in the 2022 Southeastern
Conference championship game .
Stetson Bennett threw a season-high four touchdown passes in
another stellar postseason performance, while Christopher Smiths
heads-up play gave the Bulldogs an early spark .
Georgia (13-0, No . 1 CFP) also caught a big break when Smith
deflected a pass that bounced off an LSU receiver’s helmet and wound
up being picked off by the Bulldogs, setting up a score that contributed
to a 35-10 lead by halftime .
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels re-injured a sore right ankle late
in the second quarter, giving way to Garrett Nussmeier in the second
half .
The backup guiding the Tigers (9-4, No . 14 CFP) to three touch
-
downs, but it wasn’t nearly enough .
Georgia accomplished something that not even last seasons
national championship squad could could do — win its first SEC
title since 2017 . The Bulldogs were denied in this game a year ago
by Alabama, before bouncing back to beat the Crimson Tide in
the title game
.
The Bulldogs showed they are more than just a bunch of talented
athletes — this is a smart, well-coached group .
When Nazir Stackhouse burst through the middle of the line to
block LSUs 32-yard field goal attempt late in the first quarter, Smith
knew what to do .
LSU quickly tied it up on Daniels’ 53-yard touchdown pass to
Kayshon Boutte, only to have Bennett take control from there .
The sixth-year senior, a former walk-on who was offensive MVP of
both Georgia playoff wins a year ago,
struck for four TD passes in
a less than 15-minute span:
3 yards to Brock Bowers, 22
yards to Ladd McConkey, 14
yards to Darnell Washington
and 3 yards to Dillon Bell .
Just like that, Georgia led
35-7 .

2009 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
ALABAMA 32, FLORIDA 13
The No . 2 Alabama Crimson Tide won its 22nd Southeastern Conference
Championship by beating No . 1 Florida, 32-13 with a balanced attack that gave
the Tide its first league title since 1999 . Alabama is now 13-0 on the season
while the Gators fell to 12-1 . It marked the first time in the history of the SEC
Championship Game that both teams came in undefeated .
Our entire team played great . Greg [McElroy] played great . Mark [Ingram] played great .
Julio [Jones] played great,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said . “Really, most of the credit
goes to our guys up front on the offensive line . This is a great win for our program .
Alabama amassed 490 yards of total offense against a Florida defense that had been limit-
ing its opponents to an average of 230 yards per game this season .
Junior quarterback Greg McElroy, who threw for 239 yards and a touchdown on 12 com-
pletions, was named the games most valuable player .
“It’s been such an incredible season,” McElroy said . “We started the season here (in the
Georgia Dome) with a win and were able to win a championship today . I can’t say enough
about my offensive line, (and) we have the greatest coaching staff in the country .
Sophomore running back Mark Ingram rushed for 113 yards on 28 carries including three
rushing touchdowns . He is now the Tides all-time single-season rushing leader with 1,542,
surpassing Bobby Humphrey’s 1986 record of 1,471 and becomes the first Alabama rusher
to go over 1,500 yards in a season . His three touchdowns tied an SEC Championship Game
record . Ingram also caught two passes for 76 yards .

2010 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
AUBURN 56, SOUTH CAROLINA 17
Cam Newton left nothing to chance . He ran and passed the Auburn Tigers to a
shot at the national championship they were denied six years ago, and he might
as well start working on that Heisman pose, too .
Newton passed for a career-high 335 yards and four touchdowns, plus ran
for a pair of TDs in an MVP performance that led Auburn to the Southeastern Conference
championship with a 56-17 rout of Steve Spurrier and South Carolina on Saturday .
The Tigers, who came into the day sitting atop the Bowl Championship Series standings,
must wait 24 hours before getting the official word, but its nothing more than a formality:
They’ll be playing Oregon for the national title on Jan . 10 in Glendale, Ariz .
Hard to imagine the Heisman vote even being close after the 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior
followed Tim Tebow as only the second player in the history of the top division to run AND
pass for 20 touchdowns in a season . He slipped away from defenders with his surprising
quickness, buying extra time to throw . He broke tackles with his power, not at all shock-
ing given that he outweighed all three of South Carolinas starting linebackers by at least 25
pounds .
Or he just ran right over ‘em . Newton guided the Tigers (13-0) to touchdowns on their
first three possessions, though South Carolina (9-4) was in the game as halftime approached .
Trailing only 21-14, the Gamecocks simply had to knock down Newtons last-gasp pass on
the final play before the break .
They couldnt even do that .Newton heaved one up and DeVonte Holloman, standing in
front of Terrell Zachery, leaped to tip it away . But the deflected ball went right to Darvin Ad-
ams for an improbable 51-yard touchdown that changed the complexion of the game . After
South Carolina missed a field goal on the first possession of the second half, it was all Tigers .
The Tigers set an SEC championship game record for scoring and piled up 589 yards .
Newton had a hand in 408 of them, breaking his previous best of 317 yards passing against
Chattanooga and leading Auburn in rushing with 14 carries for 73 yards . Despite two big
drops, Adams set another SEC championship record with 217 yards on seven receptions .

2011 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
LSU 42, GEORGIA 10
Tyrann Mathieu turned in an MVP performance when LSU needed him
most, running back a punt 62 yards for a touchdown, setting up another
score with a fumble recovery and finally finishing off No . 12 Georgia
with his best play yet, a whirling dervish of a return that led to the deci
-
sive TD of a 42-10 victory in the Southeastern Conference championship
gam
e Saturday . LSU (13-0) advanced to a spot in the BCS title game in New Orleans,
just 75 miles from its Baton Rouge campus .
The Bulldogs tried to shake things up, racing to a 10-0 lead that couldve been even
bigger if they hadnt dropped a pair of potential touchdown passes in the first quarter .
But, thanks to Mathieu, the deficit was only 10-7 when the teams went to the locker
room . He took a punt at his own 38, found an opening and was gone – all the way to the
end zone for his second punt return for a touchdown in as many weeks .
That was long forgotten by the time the fearless sophomore was done .
On Georgias first possession of the second half, quarterback Aaron Murray tried
to scramble for a first down but had the ball knocked loose just before he hit the turf .
Who was there to fall on it at the Bulldogs 26? Mathieu with his fifth fumble recovery
of the season .
LSU quickly seized its first lead . The Tigers finally picked up a first down, then fresh
-
man Kenny Hilliard broke off a 15-yard run for the first of his three touchdowns
. Nor-
mally, that would’ve been more than enough to win the games MVP award
. Not even
close on this day .
The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder cradled the ball, took off down the center of the field,
cut back to his left, stutter-stepped and turned on a burst of speed, basically came to a
stop around the Georgia 30, then took off again and was finally dragged down at the 17 .
LSU took control with a 21-point third quarter, coming back from a double-digit
deficit for the second week in a row and leaving little doubt that its the best team in
country heading into bowl season . The only other unbeaten team, Houston, was blown
out in the Conference USA championship game Saturday . All the other top teams have
at least one loss .

opportunity to reclaim the advantage in a contest that featured six lead changes . With
15 seconds remaining and the Bulldogs on the Alabama eight-yard line, quarterback
Aaron Murray tossed a pass that was tipped and fallen on by Chris Conley at the five-
yard line, but the clock expired to end the game .

Blake Sims threw a pair of touchdown passes in an MVP perfor-
mance that carried top-ranked Alabama to a 42-13 win over No

Sims completed 23 of 27 passes for 262 yards as Alabama pulled
away with a 21-point fourth quarter . T .J . Yeldon and Derrick Henry
each had a couple of touchdown runs .

for 83 yards . With 115 catches on the year he broke the SEC record of 113 set by Vander

bilts Jordan Matthews in 2013
. His 83 yards gives him 1,656 on the season, just 83 yards
shy of the season record set by LSU’s Josh Reed in 2001 . Cooper’s 12 catches broke the
SEC Championship game record of 11 set by Floridas Reidel Anthony in 1995 .
Missouri (10-3), which won the SEC East, fell behind 21-3 at halftime but then scored
10 unanswered points to come within eight, 21-13, on an Andrew Baggett field goal
with 4:37 left in the third quarter .
The Tide went 68 yards in 10 plays — never even going to third down — to seize a 7-0
lead less than 4 minutes into the game .
Missouri, which reached the title game for the second year in a row, managed to stay in
this one much of the way thanks to Maty Mauks deep passing . He completed throws of
63, 47, 32 and 26 yards .
After a series of short throws, Sims suddenly went deep on a 58-yard touchdown pass
to DeAndrew White that made it 14-0 early in the second quarter . On the first snap
of the fourth quarter, Sims, the fifth-year senior hooked up with Christion Jones on a
6-yard TD toss that stretched the lead to 28-13 .Henry tacked on a couple of touchdown
runs to make it a blowout . He finished with 141 yards on 20 carries .
Missouri struggled to run against the Tide defense, limited to 41 yards on 23 carries .

2015 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
ALABAMA 29, FLORIDA 15
Derrick Henry rushed for 189 bruising yards and second-ranked Ala-
bama defeated No
. 18 Florida 29-15 in the 2015 SEC Championship
Game .
The Crimson Tide held the Gators to just three yards of offense in the
second and third quarters .
Florida briefly grabbed a 7-2 lead on Antonio Callaway’s 85-yard punt return for a
touchdown early in the second quarter, but Alabama took control from there .
Henry came into the game as a Heisman favorite and finished with a staggering 44 car
-
ries against one of the nations top defenses to earn MVP honors
. He put Alabama ahead
to stay on a 2-yard run late in the first half, and looked as fresh at the end of the game as
he did at the beginning, carrying the ball right to the final seconds .
Henry tied the SEC record for touchdowns in a season (23) and eclipsed Herschel
Walker’s 34-year-old conference mark for rushing yards in a year with 1,986 .
The expected defensive slugfest — both teams were among the nations leaders in
numerous categories -- played out in the first half, though Alabama clearly had the
superior team . The Tide led just 12-7 at the break, scoring a safety off a blocked punt,
settling for a field goal after a long drive, and turning it over deep in Florida territory .
The Tide complemented its pound-and-ground offense with a couple of huge passing
plays . Calvin Ridley leaped between two Florida defenders to pull down a 55-yard pass
at the Florida 2, setting up Henry’s touchdown . ArDarius Stewart made an even more
spectacular grab in the third quarter, going up in traffic to snare a 32-yard scoring pass
before flipping to the turf on his head .

2016 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
ALABAMA 54, FLORIDA 16
Alabama unleashed all its weapons against the Florida Gators,
scoring off an interception and a blocked punt in the first half, snuffing
out their last gasp with a goal-line stand, and wearing down Florida at
the end with a dominant running game in a 54-16 victory at the Geor
-
gia Dome
.
The Crimson Tide bolted to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter, despite being held to mi-
nus-7 yards and no first downs
. Minkah Fitzpatrick returned an interception 44 yards
for a touchdown, and Josh Jacobs went 27 yards for a score with a blocked punt . A field
goal was set up by another pick — one of three thrown by Florida quarterback Austin
Appleby in the first half . The Tide led 33-16 at halftime and iced the victory with scoring
drives of 98 and 91 yards, sparked by a goal-line stand that finished off the last gasp by
the Gators (8-4, No . 15 CFP) .
The Gators marched the length of the field on their opening possession, the first
touchdown given up by the Tide in more than 17 quarters . They had another long TD
drive near the end of the first half to give themselves a glimmer of hope .
The last of those hard times came when Florida drove to the Crimson Tide 1 in the
third quarter . Jordan Scarlett attempted to leap over the line on third-and-goal, but he
never got off the ground . Appleby then threw incomplete in the back of the end zone on
fourth down, giving the Tide all the momentum .
Alabama finished with 174 yards rushing in the second half . The bulk of the carries
went to bruising sophomore Bo Scarbrough, who had two short touchdown runs and
finished with 91 yards on 11 carries .

2017 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
GEORGIA 28, AUBURN 7
Roquan Smith came up with two crucial turnovers, freshman Jake
Fromm threw a pair of touchdown passes and Georgia claimed a 28-7 vic
-
tory over Auburn in the 2017 Southeastern Conference Championship
Game - the first held at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium .
The game was largely a defensive struggle, but Fromm was efficient
in completing 16 of 22 attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns . The Bulldogs also rushed
for 238 yards .
Auburn junior running back Kerryon Johnson played even though he suffered a shoulder
injury in the Iron Bowl; however, he wasnt the same, as he finished with 44 rushing yards on
13 carries . Georgias victory gave the Bulldogs their first SEC championship since 2005 .
Although Georgia outplayed Auburn for much of the game, the Bulldogs were penalized
seven times for 91 yards, which helped keep things close . Ultimately, Georgia outgained Au
-
burn 421-259 and won the turnover battle 2-0
.
The turning point of the night occurred early in the second quarter when Auburn was in
the Georgia red zone and driving to take a two-score lead . Georgia linebacker Davin Bellamy
strip-sacked Auburns Jarrett Stidham from behind before linebacker Smith recovered the
fumble to kill the drive .
The Bulldogs capitalized on that change of momentum by going 83 yards on the ensuing
drive and finishing with a two-yard touchdown from Fromm to Isaac Nauta to help tie the
game at 7-7 . Georgia converted a short field goal on its next possession and entered the locker
room with a 10-7 advantage .
The Bulldogs extended the lead to 13-7 in the third quarter and began to impose their will
on the Tigers .
Fromm threw a 17-yard touchdown to Terry Godwin and then connected with Godwin
on a two-point attempt to increase the lead to 21-7 . Georgias DAndre Swift later broke off a
64-yard touchdown run .

2018 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
ALABAMA 35, GEORGIA 28
Jalen Hurts came off the bench to pass for one touchdown and run
for another in the fourth quarter, rallying No . 1 Alabama to a 35-28 win
over No . 4 Georgia for the Southeastern Conference title .
It was a stunning twist on the scenario that played out less than 11
months earlier on the very same field when Tua Tagovailoa replaced Hurts
at the start of the second half with Alabama trailing Georgia in the CFP title game .
This time, Tagovailoa had to be helped off the field with just over 11 minutes remaining
after one of his own linemen stepped on the quarterbacks right ankle as he attempted to
throw . Hurts calmly guided the Crimson Tide to the game-tying touchdown with a 10-yard
pass to Jerry Jeudy .
After Georgia was stuffed on a fake punt near midfield, Hurts took matters into his own
hands for the winning score . Spotting an opening up the middle, he took off on a 15-yard TD
run with 1:04 remaining . Georgia picked off Tagovailoa twice, and the Alabama quarterback
spent much of his spare time in the medical tent and was largely ineffective as the Bulldogs
built a pair of two-touchdown leads . Hurts completed 7 of 9 passes for 82 yards, to go along
with five carries for 28 yards in less than a quarter of action .
Georgia sophomore Jake Fromm threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns, while Tago-
vailoa was only 10 of 25 for 164 yards .
The Alabama QB did spark the comeback with a short pass to Jaylen Waddle that resulted in
a 51-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, cutting Georgias lead to 28-21 .
Alabamas Josh Jacobs rushed for 83 yards and a pair of scores to earn MVP honors .

2019 SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
LSU 37, GEORGIA 10
No . 1 LSU locked up a spot in the College Football Playoff for the
first time, beating No . 4 Georgia 37-10 in the Southeastern Conference
Championship Game .
Joe Burrow threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers .
He was the Tigers’ second-leading rusher with 41 yards on 11 carries, often
leaving the Bulldogs grasping at air as he twirled this way and that . He even caught a pass on
a ball that was batted down at the line and wound up his arms, taking off for a 16-yard gain .
The Heisman-worthy moment came late in the third quarter . With Georgia bringing the
heat, Burrow spun to his left to get away from lineman Travon Walker, whirled back to his
right to send Walker sprawling to the turf, then delivered a pass on the run while sprinting
toward the LSU sideline with another defender in hot pursuit .
Justin Jefferson hauled in the throw just beyond midfield and took off down to the Bull-
dogs 9 for a 71-yard play . Three plays later, Burrow delivered his third TD pass of the game,
hooking up with Terrace Marshall Jr ., on a 4-yard touchdown pass that essentially finished off
the Bulldogs .
Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm was 20-for-42 with 225 yards with a touchdown and
two interceptions .
