FAQ – Automated Red-Light Enforcement
Question: Why are Red Light Cameras being installed?
Answer: More than two people are killed every day on U.S. roads by impatient and reckless
red-light running drivers, according to data analysis performed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic
Safety. The most recent crash data available shows 939 people were killed in red light running
crashes in 2017 a 10-year high and a 28% increase since 2012. With the number of red-light
running crashes on the rise, AAA calls for drivers to use caution when approaching. signalized
intersections, and for pedestrians and cyclists to stay alert when crossing the street.
Automated Enforcement is endorsed as a safety tool by the Governor’s Highway Safety
Association, AAA, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety and the National Safety Council.
Question: How will I know where the cameras are?
Answer: As a warning to drivers, the Police Department has placed new photo enforcement
signage that is clearly visible at all red-light intersections being enforced by cameras. Additionally,
the Police Department will provide an initial 30-day warning period, during which time drivers will
get used to the new signs and red-light runners will receive Warning Notices in the mail.

Answer: Warning Notices are courtesy notices extended by the Police Department, in addition
